In a bold address on TV3’s NewDay program, Malik Basintale, the Deputy Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), shared his vision for January 7, 2025, predicting three transformative events he believes will shape the future of Ghana. His remarks come as political anticipation grows ahead of the upcoming election, with Basintale expressing sharp criticism of the current administration’s record and urging change.
The outspoken NDC official began his forecast with a prediction that John Dramani Mahama will be sworn in as the next President of Ghana. Basintale argued that the administration of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is currently Vice President, has failed to deliver on its promises, leaving Ghanaians disappointed after eight years in power. He pointed to what he described as widespread economic challenges, asserting that Ghanaians are relying heavily on financial tools like Qwikloan, a mobile loan service, to make ends meet.
Basintale claimed that “more than 80 percent of today survive on Qwikloan,” emphasizing his view that economic policies have forced citizens into financial dependency. He illustrated this by sharing a common scenario where people are forced to switch mobile money numbers when receiving transfers to manage multiple debts on different platforms. This, he argued, reflects a systemic issue that requires change.
According to Basintale, his second prediction for January 7 is that “every Ghanaian will be issued a certificate of survival.” He used this metaphor to underscore the financial strain many citizens are experiencing. His comments echo his critique of Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and, more broadly, the current administration’s economic policies.
Finally, Basintale’s third forecast was a symbolic one: “we would all move to Qwikloan and thank Qwikloan for holding all the youths of this country up.” Basintale contended that youth reliance on the loan service is emblematic of the current economic climate, which he believes the NDC, under Mahama’s leadership, could transform.
Basintale’s remarks have sparked a wave of discussions on social media and among political commentators. As the country heads towards a closely contested election, it remains to be seen how his predictions resonate with the public and how they will influence the political landscape leading into January 2025.
