Nurses to enjoy duty-free vehicle imports under Bawumia – NAPO assures
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced plans for nurses in Ghana to enjoy duty-free importation of vehicles with engine capacities below 1.8 liters if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia leads the government in 2025. This pledge was made during an address to students at the Korle Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training Institute in Accra on Wednesday, October 23, and was met with applause from the audience.
“Dr. Bawumia, the incoming president of Ghana, will provide free duty on vehicles with engine capacities less than 1.8 for nurses,” Dr. Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, stated. He emphasized the NPP’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding the critical role nurses play in the healthcare sector and assured the students that a Bawumia-led government would implement policies aimed at improving their livelihoods.
The Vice Presidential Candidate reaffirmed the NPP’s support for the nursing profession, pledging the continuation of the nursing trainee allowance, a policy first introduced by the NPP. Napo warned that if the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President John Mahama were to regain power, they would abolish the allowance, making life more difficult for nursing trainees.
“Former President John Mahama and the NDC do not believe in the nursing trainee allowance. If they win, they will cancel it, making life harder for you. So reject the NDC,” Napo urged.
Dr. Prempeh also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to complete the Agenda 111 hospital projects, which aim to expand healthcare infrastructure and create more employment opportunities for nurses and other healthcare workers. He encouraged nurses and nursing trainees to support Dr. Bawumia and vote for all 275 NPP parliamentary candidates, adding, “The NPP cares for our nurses.”
The announcement comes as part of the NPP’s strategy to gain support from healthcare professionals ahead of the 2024 general elections, with promises to enhance their living and working conditions.
