‘I will take it to my grave’ – Muntaka on the identity of MP who betrayed NPP for Bagbin
Minister-designate for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has emphatically declared that he will never reveal the identity of the NPP MP who crossed party lines to vote for Alban Bagbin as Speaker of Ghana’s 8th Parliament. The Asawase MP made this statement during his vetting before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee, in response to a question posed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Muntaka, a key figure in the NDC caucus, firmly rejected any suggestions that the MP’s identity could be uncovered. He asserted that his vow of secrecy is unbreakable.
“You don’t know, it’s not true. You can only guess, you can’t say you know,” Muntaka said in response to Afenyo-Markin’s challenge.
He continued: “Everybody in this country has done everything humanly possible to know, including the security agencies, I believe, to know which of the NPP MPs supported us to elect Mr. Speaker. I work with people, and I have vowed that not even my wife will know this; I will die with it, and I mean it.”
The Mystery Vote
The 8th Parliament of Ghana presented a unique situation, with both the Majority NPP and the Minority NDC holding 137 seats each. However, during the election for Speaker, Alban Bagbin secured 138 votes, meaning one NPP MP voted against their party’s candidate.
This historic moment has left political analysts, security agencies, and the general public speculating about the identity of the NPP MP who broke ranks. Despite widespread efforts to uncover the truth, the individual’s identity remains shrouded in mystery, and Muntaka’s latest comments suggest it will remain that way indefinitely.
Muntaka’s Loyalty
Muntaka’s staunch commitment to protecting the identity of the MP demonstrates his respect for the trust placed in him by the individual. His statement also underscores the importance of discretion and loyalty in political alliances, particularly in the highly charged environment of Ghanaian politics.
As the mystery lingers, the revelation—or lack thereof—continues to be a source of intrigue within Ghana’s political landscape, with Muntaka’s unwavering stance ensuring the story remains unresolved.
