Fake News: GFP general secretary denies withdrawal from 2024 Elections
The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has strongly denied rumors that it has withdrawn from the upcoming 2024 presidential race. General Secretary George Afful described the reports as “fake news,” reaffirming the party’s commitment to the December 7 elections. The clarification follows a wave of misinformation suggesting that the GFP had stepped down from the race after appointing Roman Fada as their new flagbearer following the passing of the party’s founder, Madam Akua Donkor.
The rumors originated after the GFP issued a statement, signed by National Organizer Richard Boctchway, addressing their decision to appoint Roman Fada as the new leader. The statement, which was meant to honor Madam Akua Donkor’s legacy, was misinterpreted by some as an indication of the GFP’s withdrawal from the race. However, George Afful quickly dispelled the misinformation in an interview with Yawa News, confirming that the party has completed all necessary steps to ensure its participation in the election.
Afful emphasized that Roman Fada, alongside party officials, filed his nomination papers with the Electoral Commission, solidifying GFP’s place in the December 7 polls. “We want to make it absolutely clear to our supporters and the general public that the GFP is fully committed to contesting the 2024 elections. Any claims suggesting otherwise are false,” he stated.
The GFP has called on Ghanaians to disregard the misleading reports and assured its supporters of the party’s readiness and dedication to honoring the legacy of its late founder. The party urged media outlets and the public to verify information before circulating, as they remain focused on presenting their vision for Ghana under Roman Fada’s leadership.
With the campaign season underway, the GFP’s announcement reaffirms its place among the contesting parties, adding to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming election.
